NEW YORK CITY’S 7TH AVENUE WAS BUZZING WITH EXCITEMENT ON SATURDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 26 2009. CROWDS AND ONLOOKERS OF ALL-AGES THRONGED THE STREETS AND SIDEWALKS AROUND THE HISTORIC VILLAGE VANGUARD, HOPING FOR GLIMPSES OF CELEBRITIES AND NOTABLES SUCH AS SARAH JESSICA PARKER, NICOLE KIDMAN, FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON AND SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON. AND OF COURSE OF THE LEGENDARY LADY HERSELF. BARBRA STREISAND.
Most artists these days know how to impress by traveling the world with large entourages and astronomical shows. But there is one who truly understands the meaning of marketing. Barbra Streisand can look back on a 52 years long career which characterizes itself as an everlasting chain of successes. Her spare life performances have transformed the 67 years old entertainer into an object of the utmost luxury. Whenever you get the change to enjoy one of her performances, you better take it. Guaranteed that her outstanding vocal talent, her great sense of humor and her ability to interact with the audience will leave you a lifetime memory. When Barbra takes the center stage, she takes it like no one can.
Barbra Streisand returned to perform in the legendary Village Vanguard for the first time since 1962. She chose this venue for a free concert for only 100 chosen ones from her large fan base, in which she brought to life her latest musical venture Love Is The Answer. Love Is The Answer is Barbra’s 63st album and a collection of ballads and jazz standards – yes, evergreens – that once again proofs the multiple award winning artist’s superb emotional clarity, depth and maturity. Never entirely at home in mainstream pop, here she snuggles up comfortably to such indestructible pieces as Smoke Gets In Your Eyes or Jacques Brel’s If You Go Away. Mostly she stays just the right side of schmaltz, though Make Someone Happy is a close call. Barbra found the opportunity to work with Grammy-winning Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall as producer and accompanist, and she has helped achieve a fine balance between singer and backing arrangements. The album is sophisticated and subtle with sublime orchestrations, but of course we didn’t expect anything less from the singer who is been regarded upon to be one of the most commercially and critically successful female entertainers in modern entertainment history and one of the best-selling solo recording artists with more than 71 million albums sold in the US and 140 million albums sold worldwide.
Love Is The Answer was released on October 3rd and might very well become another number one album for the extra ordinary artist. If so, she would be the first one to have a number one album in five consecutive decades. Barbra Streisand’s performance at the Village Vanguard, where she performed songs from her new album, as well as some of her most beloved classics such as The Way We Were and Evergreen, was a once in a lifetime event. Her last U.S. tour, in 2006, tour grossed more than $92 million, according to Billboard Boxscore, setting house gross records in 14 of the 16 arenas it played. –B-
